another one of those nights. like thousands others around the world, I can’t sleep, I keep checking the news, keep trying to call friends, keep waking up to check again. how many times have we lived through nights like this? and the cynical question we silently ask ourselves is: will it be the killing of a handful and the severely injuring of a few more, or will it be the beginning of another horror of hundreds or thousands of children, women, elderly, fathers, mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, cousins, wives, grandchildren etc. massacred?
as I write this, the drones are still flying over Gaza.
One Israeli died of his injuries from a Qassam rocket, so I think this time your mainstream media will mention this. It will frame this as another outbreak of violence, like some inevitable, incomprehensible cycle between the two sides without any fathomable reasons or real triggers that just keeps costing lives (always more Palestinian lives, but in western mainstream media, the Palestinian martyrs are usually referred to only as numbers in the “Gaza Strip controled by the radical islamist Hamas”, they don’t seem to count as humans really, do they?)
Last night, at least nine people were reportedly killed in Gaza so far, and many more injured. I think of Mohammad, the 15 year old boy from Gaza who was hit by an Israeli missile from an unmanned drone that was fired by remote control directly at his 12 year old cousin Ibrahim – who died in hospital – and him while they were playing in front of their house on August 19 and who is still recovering from the savage wounds, I’m thinking of all the effort and money we have been putting in to support him while he heals, and he is only one of those injured in one night over two months ago. We don’t count the wounded in Gaza do we?
This morning, I talked to my friend Mohammed. He said “we had a hard time last night it reminded me of cast lead. my god how close the drones were last night”
I have the urge to send you the script of our entire conversation, there is so much I could never put into words. And once again, it is a Palestinian, while literally struggling to survive, that gave me hope and strength while I dispair from worry and outrage and finally helps me calm down.
Here is what I find an accurate analysis of last night. and before that a link to a video of the sound of those drones.

IOF PROVOKES NEW WAVE OF VIOLENCE IN GAZA TO COINCIDE WITH NATIONAL SOCIAL JUSTICE PROTEST
Anyone notice the coincidence of the IOF deciding to kill Islamic Jihad’s chief rocket maker and three other militants on the same day that the national J14 social justice movement held its first major protest rally in two months? The Israeli killings led to massive retaliatory rocket fire from Gaza that killed one Israeli and injured several others. One report
says 10 were killed on both sides. At least one rocket reached as far as a suburb of Tel Aviv. The fact that these two events occurred on the same day was entirely an accident I’m sure as neither the IOF nor Bibi Netanyahu would be so cynical as to try to suck the wind out of the sails of the government’s chief critics on their day of glory.
The Tel Aviv protest and several others in other cities brought out 25,000 to resume the call for economic justice and helping the poor and disadvantaged. The turnout was a marked decline from earlier events because the leader of the national student union has deserted the ranks and taken his followers with him.
In describing the tit for tat attacks on both Gaza and Israel, the NY Times Isabel Kershner continues spewing the lies of the IOF claiming the Eilat terror attacks originated in Gaza and were authored by the Popular Resistance Committees. Yediot’s Alex Fishman has for weeks exposed the IOF’s lies offered for public consumption and even revealed a secret IDF report which admits the attack originated in Sinai and was perpetrated by militants there with no connections to Gaza or the PRC. Either Isabel Kershner doesn’t read the Hebrew press and hence isn’t doing her job, or else she’s continuing to spew lies long disproven by the Israeli media. Either way, this further confirms the shoddy journalism emanating from Eytan Bronners NYT Israel bureau
